Fine English Amati copy, late 18th century
A fine and rare English violin, made around 1780/1800. The violin is a unique and individual instrument on the Amati model, likely of old Scottish origin and of finest workmanship. The wood on top is fine grained spruce, the two piece back of narrow flamed maple. The varnish is original, yet highly worn and only partially preserved. The violin has some few excellent repairs, among them a skillfully patched and secured soundpost crack, some skillful edge doubles, a replaced lower corner of the back. The complex stringent sound is a bit mellow in the lower ranges, clear in the higher ranges. An excellent character to play Bach, that is offered ready to play, looked over by our experienced luthier.
