corilon violins

Old, oil varnished Saxon violin - excellent sound

An especially pretty old German violin from the 1930'ies. The instrument is a very good quality handmade Saxon piece of work as a copy of Antonius Stradivarius. The archings are held flat. The top is made of medium grained spruce, the two piece back of narrow flamed maple. The ribs with wider, deep flames. The transparent varnish is a rich oil varnish of a golden yellow color. The varnish is slightly patinated and in excellent condition. The scroll is well proportioned and thoroughly worked out. The condition is excellent - the violin is basically crackfree (a minor saddle repair of only about 5 mm on top). The violin is set up with a new bridge and soundpost by master maker Anton Sprenger, Mittenwald. The sound is well balanced and of a bright warm clear character with slight sweetness in the upper ranges.
