Violin, inventory of Eugen Gärtner Stuttgart (sold)
The well-known luthier and purveyor to the court, Dr. h.c. Eugen Gärtner (1864-1944) of Stuttgart, did not only build fine violins himself, he also kept an inventory of selected old and new string instruments. From that inventory comes this antique Mittenwald violin stamped EUGEN GÄRTNER and labeled "Eugen Gärtner, kgl. Hofgeigenbauer Fürstl. Hohenzollern. Hoflieferant Stuttgart. Lager in alten und neuen Streichinstrumenten." The dark red colored varnish is thinly applied and highly patinated, as it is typical for old Mittenwald instruments. The prominent scroll and the neatly engraved soundholes attest profound skills of the maker. The violin is in excellent condition and ready to play. It has the typical Mittenwald sound: Nuttily, strong, warm and somewhat dark.
