3/4 violin by Neuner & Hornsteiner, Mittenwald approx. 1850

The ateliers of Neuner & Hornsteiner reached the zenith of their art in the mid-19th century, and from there they went on to define the standards of the Mittenwald craft for many years. They incorporated the influences of the finest international violin-making schools and were highly successful around the globe. This rare 3/4 sized violin dates back to this period. It was patterned after a model by Antonio Stradivari and yet is unmistakably a Neuner & Hornsteiner piece. The thin coat of dark-red varnish is so typical of Mittenwald style that this unlabeled violin does not in fact need one to indicate its provenance. Over the years the varnish has darkened and developed a lovely, rich patina. The well-proportioned scroll - with signs from previous owners - is a highly elegant carving. With some solid, uncritical repairs that are considered it the price, this rare quality 3/4 violin is in good condition and was meticulously set up in our atelier. It is ready to play and will win you over with its bright, resonant sound, full of a pleasant warmth and strength.
