English violin No. 9 by Joseph K. Edson

The interesting sound of this handcrafted English violin convinced us to include the instrument in our catalogue. This contemporary violin is a good opportunity for sophisticated musicians to attain a handmade violin at an affordable price. This young violin was made by Joseph Edson in Sidmouth, Devon, where it was crafted in 1987. The well-chosen medium-grained spruce used for the top and mildly flamed maple of the two-piece back reflect the instrument's solid craftsmanship. The aesthetically pleasing varnish of an intense orange-red colour indicate Edsons's care and meticulous work. A letter by Edson, dated 9th June 1988, was passed down with the instrument, and it confirms this violin as his own work and valued at 1,000 British Pounds at the time. The violin's dynamic musical career has left no marks on the instrument, and the varnish is preserved in excellent condition. As is the case with all of our instruments, the musical properties of this violin were evaluated by a professional violinist, who recommended its clear, strong tone, a rather dark voice.
