George Adolphe Chanot, soloist violin no. 119

An exceptional master violin, this 1899 instrument was made by George Adolphe Chanot, a luminary whose work built bridges between the French violin-making tradition and England. It is the second of his pieces that we have had the privilege of including in our catalogue, and like Georges Adolphus Chanots violin no. 79, which he made three years earlier, no. 119 is a representative of the finest artisanry which merges stylistic influences from highly divergent sources. A classic Italian model by Bergonzi inspired it, whereas the broad corners express a clearly English touch, and the beautifully carved scroll with its blackened edges are an homage to the traditions of Mirecourt, the French violin-making town where the Chanot family had its roots. In the flawless craftsmanship of this violin, George Adolphe Chanot once again showed himself to be a faithful student of his father, Georges III Chanot, who left Paris in 1851 to work for Charles Maucotel in London. Seven years later, the elder Georges Chanot opened his own studio on Wardour Street. Georges Chanot's clients included the greatest violinists of the day, Vieuxtemps, Wieniawski, Piatti and Wilhelmj. George Adolphe Chanot, who was born in London in 1855, followed in his father’s footsteps, attaining an excellent reputation at his Manchester atelier: the multiple gold medals he won at British exhibitions confirm this. The wonderfully radiant and perfectly balanced sound of this violin is a powerful expression of the work of a remarkable personality in the violin making world. The instrument’s powerful soloist voice has delighted many generations of musicians. There are distinctive traces of use evident on the luminous dark reddish-brown varnish applied to a golden-yellow base coat. The violin is free of cracks and was kept in perfect condition, and it still features George Adolphe Chanot's original label.
