This Italian violin by Luigi Lanaro dates back to the year 1975, which places it amongst the later work of the master who was born in Vicenza in 1920. Luigi Lanaro learned his craft from Giuseppe Pedrazzini and Gaetano Sgarabotto, two of the most important and influential representatives of the Milanese school in the early 20th century. Luigi Lanaro's interest in making violins first arose during his studies of wood carving at the Liceo Artistico Pietro Selvatico in Padua, and from the beginning, Luigi Lanaro focused on the physical aspects of the classical violin model. Luigi Lanaro's career of 40 years left behind an international legacy that includes not only approximately fine stringed instruments, but also his major successes as a teacher. After five years in Buenos Aires, he was called to Mexico City to establish the Escuola de Laudería (INBA), which he oversaw for more than twenty years. After returning to Italy, Luigi Lanaro published a textbook in the 1970s as well as other papers about violin making which were informed by his own long years of studying violin and cello performance. Awards earned at the violin-making competitions in Cremona and Bagnacavallo indicate the great recognition his work received amongst his peers, although he himself did not place much stock in this form of appreciation; instead, he placed greater value on attaining the respect of demanding musicians. In this instrument, Luigi Lanaro's own violin model can be seen in its mature and perfect beauty, the sum of his multi-facetted interests and extensive experience. With its rather broad middle bouts and the dynamic lines of its corners, the instrument is his self-confident interpretation of the classic Stradivari model. The nuanced selection of wide-flamed maple for the two-piece back and narrow-flamed wood for the ribs and scroll reflect his highly refined sense of aesthetics. A rich coat of golden-orange oil varnish rounds out the appearance of this violin, which was heavily applied in keeping with good Italian tradition. Maintained in perfect and crack-free condition, the violin is compelling due to the highly sought-after Italian note in its large powerful voice which unites brilliance, warmth and clarity. A certificate of authenticity by Eric Blot, Cremona, is included in the price.
