Antique Mittenwald violin, c.1910, inventory of Eugen Gärtner Stuttgart
The well-known luthier and purveyor to the court, Dr. h. c. Eugen Gärtner (1864-1944) of Stuttgart, did not only build fine stringed instruments himself, he also kept an inventory of selected old and new string instruments. From that inventory comes this antique Mittenwald violin stamped E. GÄRTNER STUTTGART on the rib at the end button. The orange-brown colored varnish is thinly applied and highly patinated with traces from playing, as it is typical for old Mittenwald instruments. The prominent scroll and the neatly cut soundholes attest profound skills of the maker. The violin is in excellent crackfree condition and ready to play. It has the typical Mittenwald sound: Nuttily, strong, warm and somewhat dark.
