Built around 1880, this 3/4 Mirecourt violin, is an eye-catchingly lovely specimen. Its intense, radiantly warm reddish-brown varnish and its slender, delicate shape with rather deeply cut sound holes help make up the unique charm of this instrument, whose original label shows that it has the well-known and sought-after Stradivari design known as “Modèle d'après.” The moderate grain of the spruce with its subtle shifts in texture and a plain, gently grained maple back highlight the good quality of the violin, as does the detailed work on the scroll, which attempts to replicate its Italian template as closely as possible. It is a convincing instrument with a powerful sound that combines dark tones and great clarity.
