Rare 5 string viola, masterpiece by Louis Dölling Jr., Markneukirchen, 1932

This rare handmade 5 string viola is a fine quality custom made piece that was made by Louis Dölling Jr. in Markneukirchen in 1932. A fine master made 5 string viola made on the model of Antonius Stradivarius, and it is an excellent expression of of the good standards in craftsmanship of Markneukirchen small workshop instruments that had developed in this region. Quality tonewoods were chosen and covered with a transparent varnish of orange-brown that determines the antique, typical early 20th century Markneukirchen appearance of the 5 string viola. The flaming of the maple back is underlined by subtle antiqueings. Perfectly preserved, this good antique Markneukirchen 5 string viola has both a beautiful aesthetic and a highly recommendable voice, that is bright, well-balanced, warm, nuanced and of good strength.
