German viola. Saxony, 1920's

Made in the 1920's, this beautiful German viola ranks among the instruments which many female musicians and small-handed prefer because of the benefits they offer in terms of technically demanding performance. Playing an instrument with more advantageous dimensions does not have to mean accepting any musical shortcomings, although if a viola has a body length of less than 40 cm, it needs to feature excellent-quality craftsmanship. This German viola is clearly defined by its solid handwork in every way. The lovely gentle arch of the body is masterfully crafted after Stradivari; it has a two-piece back and top made from beautiful woods. The striking aesthetic of this viola is shaped by the woods and the great care with which the clean lines of the sound holes were carved and their interplay with the transparent light brown alcohol-based varnish against a golden-yellow background. Light, retouched traces of use are visible here on this well-treated and well-loved instrument which has a warm, bright and perfectly balanced sound that will win you over. The undamaged viola was carefully worked over and is offered in ready to play condition.
