Old German viola by Louis Dölling Jr., Markneukirchen

From Markneukirchen hails this beautiful old viola by Louis Dölling Jr. Markneukirchen, originally labelled and dated 1953. The broad model is after Stradivarius. The top is made of medium grained spruce, the two piece back of flamed maple with similar ribs. The varnish is very typical of the 20th century Markneukirchen school, it is transparent yet of a deep orange color, slightly craquelled at some places. The huge scroll and the pegbox are carefully and very acurately worked out, the inlaid purfling is neatly let into the edge. The viola is in very good condition and except for an f-wing repair at the bass soundhole and a minor repaired saddle crack undamaged. The viola has a beautiful warm dark and full-bodied tone, well balanced and easy to play.
