This rare master violin by François Breton is a top-quality expression of the historic Stradivari-oriented style which influenced the art of violin making in Mirecourt in the early 19th century. This is an authentic work by François Breton, who lent his name to countless mass-produced violins, and the instrument itself and its beautiful sound grant us an insight into the excellent artisanal standards which helped Mirecourt become one of the leading centres of European instrument making. Excellent spruce was selected for the top, and it features a few interesting irregularities which give the violin a matchless character. The one-piece maple back has delicate flames, and the tone woods François Breton chose highlight the confident aesthetic and musical judgment of an experienced master. The expressive carving of the scroll and the luminous golden-brown varnish create self-assured accents, even two hundred years after the instrument was crafted. Skilled musicians have left expressive traces of use which combine with the charming patina to give the appearance of this violin a personal historic note. The restorers at our workshop have confirmed the instrument’s very good condition; given its advanced age, this François Breton violin has remarkably few repairs, none of which have any effect on the sound. It is now ready to play after having been set up, and we warmly recommend this unusually affordable master violin because of its large and warm sound that blends a pleasantly gentle voice with rich volume.
