This powerful Czech violin was built in 1921 in the workshop of Alfons Vavra, unmistakably after Jakob Stainer patterns, with characteristically shaped, small soundholes, a small and elegant scroll and the typical high arching. Varnish of a golden brown color was applied over a golden brown ground and visible signs of age and use determines the mysterious antique appearance of the instrument, which is a piece of very good craftsmanship. The well-done purfling and the tastefully selected two-piece maple back give a good reference of the skills and aesthetic sense of the luthier. Some deep scratched areas on top do not have any impact on the musical qualities of the undamaged violin, which is featuring an exceptionally strong and dominant sound. Like all old stringed instruments from us, it has been thoroughly worked up by our luthiers and is ready to unfold its clear, mature and dark voice, which is very well balanced across the strings.
