A fine Neapolitanian violin by Nicolò Gagliano, dated 1762. Amongst the major violin-making cities in Italy, Naples is second only to Cremona, which in its day had a decisive impact on the style of Neapolitan violins. The artisanry of Alessandro Gagliano (approx. 1660–1725) in his home town was defined by a stylistic clarity more distinctive than that of most other regions, a style which endured for centuries. This particular instrument was crafted by his oldest son, Nicolò Gagliano (1710–1787), who is considered the most important figure in the Gagliano family; it is a classic and interesting piece honouring the Neapolitan tradition. Nicolò Gagliano's personal style was heavily influenced by his profound understanding of Cremonese models, which he emulated while nevertheless demonstrating a certain critical detachment. His dedication to Cremonese was so exemplary that some of his finest works were long regarded as authentic Stradivaris and Amatis, and Nicolò Gagliano’s own contribution to optimising the tonal properties of these models – amongst other things, his more liberal interpretation of the table and the thickness of the back – went unrecognised for quite some time. The violin presented here is a mature tribute to his craftsmanship which set a standard for Neapolitan violin making; the magnificently even grain of the spruce used for the top and the flowing flames of the maple ribs are quite eye-catching. Expert restorations which are nothing unusual for Nicolo Gagliano instrument of this age and quality have had no effect whatsoever on the sound or appearance. The transparent golden-brown varnish over a luminous golden-yellow base has a particular intensity which is as full of character as the powerful large sound. This sophisticated Nicolò Gagliano soloist violin has a rich volume that clearly distinguishes it from the voice of other instruments. The price includes a certificate of authenticity by J. & A.
