More detailed information about stringed instruments and the history of violin making.

Cellos (violoncellos) are considered the stringed instruments that most closely resembles the male human voice. The cello tone does indeed have a unique, singing character which especially antique cellos project with huge volume, an incomparable range of nearly five octaves and an extravagant wealth of registers. From baroque music to jazz and even to popular music, there is hardly a genre that is not played with old cellos. Far more than a mere “little bass”, as its name suggests, cellos as being the deepest voice in the violin family have a musical radius that extend from solo performance to various ensemble combinations. Constructing a versatile stringed instrument as the cello may be described with little exaggeration as the crowning achievement of the luthiers’ art. Discriminating musicians of any musical persuasion are sure to discover interesting old cellos and antique cellos, 3/4 cellos and cello bows with personality in our online collection. Search our website for cellos of a special maker or origin by typing e. g. "German cello" or "3/4 cello" into the search box. Discover old cellos, antique cellos and master cellos at Corilon violins: each one professionally restored by the luthiers in our violin shop and offered ready to play.
