Working from the model of classic master Niccolo Amati of Cremona, Mathias Heinicke built this beautiful violin in 1911, an interesting instrument whose meticulous crafting reflects its luthier's rich expertise. In his day, Mathias Heinicke ranked amongst the best violin makers in northern Bohemia. During Mathias Heinicke's training and as a young journeyman, he worked at the ateliers of internationally renowned masters: his journey began in Markneukirchen as a student of Ernst Reinhold Schmidt, a leading figure in the Vogtland violin-making community. After periods spent in Berlin und Budapest, Mathias Heinicke made his way to Eugenio Degani in Venice, where he spent a great deal of time both studying the historic traditions of his art and learning about the principles of the modern Italian school at the hands of one of its most famous proponents. In 1897, Mathias Heinicke returned to his home in the Egerland region and founded his workshop in Wildstein, where this interesting violin was made that speaks strongly of his time in Venice. The exceptionally well-selected tone woods are one of Mathias Heinicke's hallmarks; like some other outstanding masters, he often used centuries-old pieces of timber from such sources as church renovations. The moderately to finely grained spruce of the top and deeply flamed maple of the one-part back are varnished with a coat of a light golden-yellow; a lovely patina give this violin an historic appearance. The small, cleanly carved sound holes and the delicate scroll create an elegant air. The crackfree instrument is offered with two minor flaws (chipping) to the lower left corner and the rib, both filled, in very good condition. The violin, which is ready to play, is compelling with its bright, radiant and brilliant sound full of depth, a full yet focussed tone having a strong Italian accent, especially with the richness of its lower registers. Its provenance is confirmed by the dated original label from Mathias Heinicke and several brandstamps inside and outside.
