This splendid violin in outstanding condition is one of the rare works of John K. Empsal and was made in 1909 in the English county of West Yorkshire. This splendid violin in outstanding condition is one of the rare works of John K. Empsal and was made in 1909 in the English county of West Yorkshire. John Empsall lived in the tranquil village of Ben Rhydding, where he worked as a luthier and professional violinist in the symphony orchestra in the nearby city of Bradford. He created fine violins with great passion and exquisite detail, investing considerable amounts of time, patience and consideration as he developed high-quality varnishes. The fruits of his labour are clearly evident in the refined instruments which he produced throughout his life: they mirror not only his talents as a luthier but also the sophisticated demands of an experienced musician. This violin also communicates his flawless artisanal abilities and his quality standards, one manifestation of which is the excellent tone woods he chose. The top is made of very even-grained spruce, whereas the one-piece maple back features exceptionally attractive slightly rising flames. The work of a mature and experienced hand can be seen in the clean carving of the sound holes, the scroll and the peg box. Charming crackling on the very well-applied thick coat of varnish effectively accentuates the instrument's inimitable personality. Its marvellous sound is full of warmth, clarity and radiance as well as a precise response. After having been set up completely by the restoration experts at our atelier, the violin is now ready to play, and we heartily recommend this violin. It is full of character, an instrument for demanding musicians, as aesthetically lovely as it is wonderful in sound.
