Amongst viol (viola da gamba) players, the city of Celle is known as a renowned address for the reproduction and repair of historical instruments. Wolfgang Uebel's atelier in Celle, for example, is considered a premier address for replicas and repairs of historic instruments. A former journeyman under Peter Harlan at Sternberg Castle, Uebel has made an excellent international name for himself over the years, and he has worked for such notable institutions as the Hill Collection of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Rheinische Landesmuseum in Bonn. This viola da gamba (tenor viol) was made by Moeck in Celle in 1973 as an original copy of Joachim Tielke Hamburg and features its original bridge. The viola is a particularly refined example of high serial standards that likely received Wolfgang Uebels expert consultation. Made of moderately grained spruce, the top features a gentle arch of the table and fluting which both clearly communicate  extensive experience. Artisanry also led the company to select the gently flamed maple used in the back and ribs. The scalloped edges of the rosewood fingerboard interplay beautifully with the delicately carved rosette underneath it. This viol, which has some repairs inclding a miniature sound post crack that allow us to offer it at this price, was carefully set up in our studio. It is in good condition and ready to play. Moeck's dated original label inside the body of the gamba confirms its provenance.
