Jean-Joseph Martin (1837–1910) was one of the finest French bow makers of the second half of the 19th century, but despite the excellent quality of his work, he never achieved lasting commercial success. During the brief, illustrious peak of his career, he worked for renowned violin makers such as Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume and Joseph Hel; during the heyday of his workshop, his artistic circle included talented individuals who would later earn a place in the history of musical instruments, including Joseph Arthur Vigneron père. It was in this context that the violin bow offered here was made, which, as a full-blooded French violin bow in size 3/4, is an absolute rarity. Its excellent playing and sound qualities open up musical development opportunities for young talents that they would otherwise only gain access to years later with 4/4 violin bows. The characteristically crafted frog made of fine ebony with a mother-of-pearl eye leaves no doubt as to the origin of this violin bow. Its active and solid, pleasantly light stick made of first-class red-brown pernambuco is characterized by its high activity and produces a radiant sound of the quality for which French violin bows are renowned.
