Italian viola by Claudio Perversi, 2010, after G. Ornati
This stunningly beautiful Claudio Perversi viola embodies the dual perspective through which its maker views the art of violin making: as a witty and highly musical creator of fine instruments—and as an experienced restorer who possesses a keen understanding of the work of others.
Trained by the great masters of new Cremona violin making - Italian violin makers Stefano Conia, Francesco Bissolotti and Giorgio Scolari - the graduate of the famous violin making school in Cremona deepened his knowledge and skills in restoration with Andrew Dipper and from then on devoted himself to new construction and working with antique stringed instruments in roughly equal measure. Thus, the viola offered here is also based on a careful study of the works of Giuseppe Ornati, to whom it is in no way inferior aesthetically. The medium-aged spruce of the top and the flamed maple of the back, sides, and scroll shine beneath the thinly applied, reddish-brown oil varnish in the Cremonese style. The finely cut, narrow F-holes and the beautiful craftsmanship of the scroll, corners, and edge inlay reflect Perversis’s individual style in his engagement with Ornati. Preserved without cracks and with few signs of use, this lovely Italian viola is in excellent condition and impresses discerning musicians with the overtone-rich delicacy of its bright, sweet sound in the upper register, which displays impressive maturity and clarity in the lower registers. A highly recommended instrument from our collection of young Italian violins of excellent provenance, which also hold great potential as an investment.
