This wonderful 18th century master violin of the near circle of Sebastian Klotz is a rare piece that combines all the desired tonal and aesthetical features. The traditional Bavarian violin-making village of Mittenwald was the birthplace of this fine master violin which offers musicians a highly professional tone as well as comfortable playing characteristics. As a piece that is superior from the typical pieces of its era (approximately 1740-1860), this Sebastian Klotz circle violin exhibits the magnificent quality that the craftsmanship of Mittenwald's Klotz family luthiers had achieved in the late 18th century. At that time, the successors of the legendary Mathias Klotz and masters such as the equally influential Matthias "Dax" Hornsteiner set high standards, forming the cornerstone for the excellent international reputation Mittenwald violins attained – one generation before the rise of the great violin-making factories which would benefit from the prominence of the Mittenwald name. In keeping with the predominant Klotz family model of Sebastian Klotz this violin was nearly identically patterned after his template. Premium tone woods from the Karwendel mountains were given a thin coat of a luminous reddish brown that is preserved mostly on the back, creating a sophisticated antique aesthetic. The identity of the master who crafted this violin is not known, although it is clear that he was very close to Sebastian Klotz, perhaps in his workshop. He chose the finest sycamore maple for the top, and the one-piece back casts the dynamic flames of the top-tier maple in their best light, accentuating their exceptional beauty. The delicate purfling as well as the meticulous and unique carving of the scroll round out the perfect aesthetic of this violin which has been kept in ideal condition. With minor, aceptable restoration the violin is in very good condition. The restorers at our atelier set it up with the greatest of care, and in doing so, they successfully preserved the outstanding sound of this true historic rarity. Its maturity and radiant, singing power are compelling, as is its wonderful bright voice of character. The price includes a certificate by Hieronymus Köstler.
