The French luthier Joseph Maignan is the maker of this charming 19th century violin that was made in Paris in 1859. The original label inside states "Joseph Maignan Luthier. fait à Paris l'an 1857". The top is made of fine-grained spruce, the attractive two-piece back is made of mildly flamed maple. The marvelous tonewoods are varnished with a transparent varnish in distinctive medium brown tones. An elegant patina and signs of use are traces which show the violin has been well-played since the late 19th century. The violin is astoundingly well preserved, in spite of its age of more than 150 years. Undamaged and crackfree, the violin is in excellent condition and ready to play. The violin is especially suitable for soloist use, with its full, clear and precise sound supported by rounded volume.
