This French violin, built around 1880 based on a design by Didier Nicolas, is an unmistakable, quintessentially French piece from the Derazey workshop in the French violin-making town of Mirecourt. Distinctive features of its origin include the varnish and the finely cut F-holes, which—like the edge inlay that is meticulously finished at the corners—are of the highest craftsmanship. The reddish-brown varnish, with its patina and signs of wear, impressively allows the figure of the violin’s one-piece maple back and the exceptionally even grain of the spruce top to unfold their aesthetic appeal. This lovely antique French violin, bearing the D. Nicolas maker’s mark, impresses with its high-quality craftsmanship and its powerful, characterful tone—warm and full-bodied, radiant in the high registers, and generally robust.
