French violin by H. Emile Blondelet, Mirecourt 1927 – Rarity with original bridge and soundpost
This French violin, made by the important Mirecourt violin maker H. Emile Blondelet in the year before his sudden death, is in an extremely rare original condition for antique instruments. Emile Blondelet crafted this violin in the year before his sudden death – an authentic instrument from the late 1920s with a clear, strong sound and radiant highs.
Emile Blondelet was one of the most influential employees of the renowned Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy (J.T.L.) company in Mirecourt, where he had begun his apprenticeship and in 1908 had risen to co-director alongside Alfred Alexandre Acoulon. This impressive career was due in no small part to Blondelet's exceptional craftsmanship, which was able to flourish at J.T.L. through his work with the best masters and which found expression in a series of personal instruments that, like the violin offered here, are interesting examples of French violin making in the 1920s. Only the delicate craquelle that the luminous orange-brown varnish has developed over a century gives a hint of the great age of this Emile Blondelet violin, which is in remarkably good original condition, right down to the bridge branded with Blondelet's brand and the original soundpost. Emile Blondelet's label and another stamp on the lower rib underscore the provenance of this violin, which satisfies the highest musical demands with the clarity of its powerful sound and develops excellent radiance in the upper registers.
