Janos Stowasser is a leading name in contemporary Hungarian music history – yet even those familiar with his work will be surprised by this professionally crafted 1910 violin.

This historic Hungarian violin from the highly esteemed workshop of Janos Stowasser is a top-quality work which harkens back to a chapter of Budapest musical history in the early 20th century – a chapter from an international story of success which began in 1824 in the Bohemian town of Graslitz. That was where Wenzel Stowasser opened his workshop for brass instruments, and eventually his sons went from there to become extremely successful instrument makers in their own right and worked in over ten countries on three continents. In the year 1910, when this violin with Stowasser's original label was made, Wenzel's grandson Janos Stowasser Jr. was managing the business in Budapest; this violin is an impressive confirmation that he had excellent employees in the field of stringed instruments as well. His luthiers not only upheld the highest quality standards but also added personal accents to their work. This distinctive Stradivari model with the unusually clean lines of the sound holes and the scroll carved with such stylistic confidence reflect the work of an experienced and excellently trained master. Stowasser's luthiers also demonstrated their aesthetic talent in the tone woods they chose: the exceptionally even grain of the spruce top and the one-piece back of rare maple cut from the slab and featuring captivating and dynamic flames also explain the top-tier musical musical properties of this violin from the city on the Danube. The instrument's thick coat of oil varnish has developed breathtakingly lovely historic crackling, as is typical for varnish of this outstanding artisanal quality. Our restoration experts received this master instrument in undamaged condition and set it up with the care such a fine violin deserves. With a voice that is still clear, sweet and bright even more than a century after it was crafted, it is the perfect choice for musicians with high standards. With an optional certificate and trade-in option.
