Jean-Baptiste Lemarquis (*1730) was an 18th-century French violin maker who lived and worked in Mirecourt. His main work comprises violins with a balanced sound in the style of the classical French school from around 1760–1800.

Antique violin – a French work by Jean-Baptiste Lemarquis, made between 1780 and 1790 in Mirecourt – captivates with its impressively powerful sound. The characteristic stamp ‘Le Marquis de l'air oisaux’ was later adopted as a brand name by the renowned workshops J.T.L. and Laberte into the 20th century to give their own models additional tonal and historical appeal. The warm varnish, applied to a golden yellow base and darkened over time, with its patina and signs of wear, gives the violin an authentic historical character. With minor age-appropriate, solidly executed repairs to the top, this Lemarquis violin presents itself as a well-played string instrument with a rich history that has grown over two centuries.
