This good fullsized violin was made in Mittenwald in approximately 1890/1900 in the workshop of Georg Tiefenbrunner; it is a prime example of the Mittenwald tradition of violin making. The time ranks among the later period of this famous Bavarian craftsman. After his apprenticeships under Lorenz Kriner in Landshut and Andreas Engleder in Munich, both of whom were leading figures amongst violinmakers of their day, Georg Tiefenbrunner married the daughter of a zither maker named Krenn and took over his workshop, where he contributed to major milestones in the development of the zither. Seen from the perspective of the violin world, Georg Tiefenbrunner's shift to another medium was a loss, as this instrument with its original label testifies. His impressive artisanal abilities and advice are clearly evident in the delicate purfling which extends far into the corners and runs close along the edges of the instrument; his concepts can also be seen in the careful carving of the expressive scroll. A native of the Mittenwald region, Georg Tiefenbrunner remained true to his heritage in selecting the tone woods. The medium-grained spruce for the top and mildly flamed maple for the one-part back are both premium woods from the Karwendel mountains. It was set off with a tasteful golden-brown varnish. Some varnish flaws and a mark to the edge have no impact on this Georg Tiefenbrunner violin's value or musical properties. After having been meticulously set up by our experienced luthier, this good sounding instrument is now being offered in good condition and ready to play. We can recommend its dark, warm, clear, intense sound full of character.
