Matthias Wörnle (presumed) – An unplayed Mittenwald master violin made for Neuner & Hornsteiner

This new unplayed master violin from Mittenwald is most likely a prototype made for the famous workshop Neuner & Hornsteiner – an instrument of outstanding quality with an individual style which suggests the work of the highly regarded contemporary master Matthias Wörnle.

In 1925 the Mittenwald instrument manufacturer Neuner & Hornsteiner celebrated the 175th anniversary of its founding with justified pride in the many achievements throughout its long history. The anniversary took place in a year of crisis, a time still clouded by the economic aftereffects of World War I. Regardless of the situation, however, this excellent violin was commissioned by Neuner & Hornsteiner at one of the town's finest workshops, and presumably it was intended as a prototype for a new line of top-quality Neuner & Hornsteiner violins. The violin articulates the rich craftsman tradition of Mittenwald and is complemented by interesting traits which are common in violins from the Vogtland region. Sound holes carved with exceptionally delicate precision and the magnificent tone woods – especially the beautifully flamed maple used for the two-piece back –demonstrate the mastery of its maker at first glance. The violins rich soft coat of orange-brown oil varnish shows a few marks which are the result of having been stored for so long, and although it cannot be stated with full certainty that Matthias Wörnle was indeed the creator of this instrument, the varnish and edgework corresponds to his style, as does the distinctive carving of the scroll and peg box. This unusual violin has remained unplayed and new for nearly one hundred years, and we have thoroughly set it up and now offer it ready to play. This remarkable exemplar is also exemplary due to its sound: full of timbre and radiant with the richness of aged tone woods and a silky and elegant sound, its mature voice will perfectly satisfy high musical standards.
