Simon Kriner (1779-1821) was an exceptional figure among the Mittenwald violin makers of the period. Simon Kriner came from a simple family of weavers and grew to become one of the best Mittenwald masters of the early 19th century. In keeping with old tradition, he loaded his instruments into a knapsack and wandered through Europe with it, making his way to England, France and Russia. And as a part owner of the Baader & Öttel “publishing company,” he also ranked among the most successful businessmen of his day. This particular Simon Kriner violin is a mature piece from late in Simon Kriner's career: it is a typical Mittenwald instrument with a large, powerful scroll and high-quality tonewoods of regional origin. With its thick patina and transparent red-brown varnish, this Mittenwald violin is an enchanting and rare historic specimen in very good restored condition. Its powerful, balanced sound is nuanced and features warm, dark tones in the lower ranges and bright tones in the upper.
