This viola, crafted in 1987 by the English violin maker Phillip Cray in Newark, is a relatively new instrument: a very well-designed and superbly crafted 41.5 cm viola with a beautiful oil varnish in a particularly lovely, deep reddish-brown colour. Its distinctive scroll, the individually curved F-holes and the beautifully crafted edges and inlays exude a playful elegance.
