English master violin by George Hudson

George Hudson (1859-1916) explored the art of violin making for ten years before creating his first instrument. This kind of meticulousness is a rare phenomenon and is the defining characteristic of this elegant and truly flawless violin. It is marked as #50 of only 100 instruments crafted by this English master, who took his inspiration here from a Guarneri model he modified by adding his own geometric details. The beautiful golden orange-brown oil varnish is extremely luminous, as is typical of English instruments, and has crackling on many spots. The varnish is the perfect counterpart to the fine-grain spruce of the top and the fine maple of the one piece back. The distinctive scroll was carved with great precision and complements the overall aesthetic of this fine George Hudson violin, which still features its original label and brandmark. Its strong, powerful “Guarneri sound” is testament to George Hudson's mastery, a man who is not as widely known as he deserves to be.
