Famed violinist Niccolò Paganini referred to his Guarneri violin as Il Cannone: it was the the classic Cremonese violin maker’s most prominent masterpiece and became the template for countless copies and replicas. The 1743 instrument was also the “godmother” to this violin, and its large, warm and mature sound pays a worthy tribute to the historic Guarneri role model – which is a pleasant surprise, given its diminutive appearance. With its corpus length of 35.0 cm, it has a petite stature, and its narrow neck also contributes to its extremely comfortable playing. Excellent tone woods were carefully chosen for this instrument, and a luminous orange-brown varnish beautifully highlights the even grain of the spruce top and the deep flames of the choice maple used for the two-piece back and ribs.
