3/4 - Fine German 3/4 cello, circa 1860
This historic 3/4-sized cello was made around 1860 in the tradition-rich violin-making region of Markneukirchen und Klingenthal in Saxony's Vogtland. This is a cello of uncommon beauty. A very slender instrument, it came from an unknown luthier who did work of excellent craftsmanship, as is evident in the exceptionally well-shaped edges, the delicate purfling and the selection of tone woods. The transparent golden-brown varnish draws the eye to the interesting and close flames of the maple back, and the flaming is even more pronounced on the ribs. There is a charming historic patina on the cello. As is often the case with older instruments of this quality, traces of use by previous owners can be seen, and minor, acoustically insignificant repairs were made to the top. Our luthiers have thoroughly set up this highly recommended cello and made it ready to play. Advanced younger musicians and cellists of smaller stature will truly appreciate the expressive possibilities this instrument offers with its warm, nuanced sound, which is mature, full of volume and rich in timbre.
