French Lebrun violin by J.T.L., approx. 1900

This violin was crafted approx. 1900 in the well-known workshops of Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy (J.T.L.) in Mirecourt; it is an instrument of the "Lebrun" brand that features an interesting, nonstandard appearance. The violin has medium high archings and bears the original Lebrun-label inside the body. The varnish imitates the flames of the one-piece maple back, a technique that is very rare to be found on violins and reminds of similar methods to apply artificial grains that were popular in 19th century craftwork. Even the purfling is only scratched, as it is at many J.T.L. violins. This unique style is completed by the antique character of the red-brown colored varnish, that developed interesting patina and bears traces of use by former owners. The small, expressive scroll is another detail of the violin´s individuality. Our expert luthiers completely worked over this well preserved instrument and made it ready to play with a new rosewood setup, and they corrected the neck that was a bit too strong somehow originally. Now the violin features very comfortable playing properties and expresses its beautiful, warm sound, that is resonant with some dark note.
