This antique lion head violin, the pegbox decorated by a finely crafted lion head, was built approx. 1850 as an early example of instruments from Mittenwald featuring this special ornament. This lion head is an especially well done in the tradition of the Kriner workshop that indicates the upscale quality of the violin. Its two-part back was crafted of mildly flamed maple, as well as the ribs, a quality tonewood that is an interesting contrast to the interesting fine  grained spruce of the two-piece top. The golden brown, luminous varnish is quite typical for Mittenwald violins, and its interesting patina and traces of use match the antique appearance of the instrument perfectly. The violin bears a Jacobus Stainer model label and is offered undamaged, worked over by our expert luthiers thoroughly and is offered ready to play. This lion head violin has a convincingly strong and clear sound that is silvery and mature in character.
