An interesting piece which reflects the spirit of Saxony's violin-making tradition, this violin by H. C. Stümpel was made in 1882, as the original label confirms. Stümpel was an extremely productive luthier who was highly regarded for his deft craftsmanship. He crafted violins using no fewer than six of his own templates, which he referred to as façons. This particular instrument is a masterful example of his “Joseph Joachim façon”; its most striking characteristic is the moderately high table, which reflects Stümpel's concept. The deeply flamed maple of the two-part back is an eye-catching demonstration of the tone woods' excellent quality. Its light-brown varnish gives the instrument an historic character. Despite its age, the violin is completely undamaged, and we offer it in outstanding condition. Our luthiers added new rosewood fittings as they meticulously set it up. This H. C. Stümpel violin is now ready to play and has an exquisite sound — large, radiant and resonant, mature and especially well suited for soloist performance.
