This rare US-American violin by Lincoln Clough, which was crafted in 1925, conveys a profound knowledge of the Italian violin-making tradition. It is an impressive manifestation of the artistic canon created by historic 17th century masters such as the widely copied Antonio Stradivari, an oeuvre which transcended national borders. As an excellent luthier who produced this melodious instrument Lincoln Clough paid tribute to far more than merely the aesthetic of the classical models: when crafting of the body, he continued to honour the principles which define the exceptional nature of Italian stringed instruments. He demonstrated self-assured experience in his selection of US American tone woods for this broad but flat-arched model. The unmistakably Italian and unique character of this instrument comes from both the moderate to widely grained spruce of the top as well as the back and ribs of maple with most beautiful flames. The charming patina of the transparent golden-brown oil varnish are highlights of an instrument which was well played and thoroughly appreciated for almost 100 years. Maintained in excellent condition and entirely free of cracks, this interesting American violin has now been completely set up by the restoration specialists at our atelier, and its sound was professionally adjusted to acoustic perfection. Its warm, large, melting tone with a singing quality in the upper registers offers delightful interpretative opportunities to sophisticated musicians.
