Mittenwald violin by Matthias Klotz, 1981

This 1981 Mittenwald violin is a both a powerful young instrument and a mature work; it was made by Matthias Klotz in keeping with the traditions of his famous family. Born in 1907, Matthias Klotz was a master luthier who learned his trade from his uncle, Laurenz Niggl, in the immediate vicinity of where the Mittenwald violin making museum is now located. This Matthias Klotz violin is a worthy tribute to the great family it hails from. Solid craftsmanship and top-tier materials defined the way the high-arched and very broadly contoured instrument was crafted; it can be regarded as a distinctive interpretation of the classic Klotz model. The tone woods from the Karwendel Mountains are of distinctive quality, and Matthias Klotz always made a point of selecting and felling the trees himself. The moderately grained spruce of the top and the lovely dynamic flames on the maple of the one-piece back combine the finest resonant properties with a charming aesthetic which is effectively highlighted by the bright golden-yellow varnish. The violin’s appearance is a perfect match for its radiantly beautiful, bright and powerful voice, and it stands out with its crisp response – a resonant sound rich in timbre with good volume. It has earned our special recommendation.
