Master violin by Max Richard Herold

This master violin was crafted with exceptional care by Max Richard Herold in the village of Brunndöbra near Klingenthal, a traditional place of violin making in Saxony. Richard Herold hails from an old family of violin and double bass makers, and throughout his long working life he was an upright and quality-conscious craftsman. While the violin making business in Saxony was under economic pressure to meet the demands for inexpensive mass production instruments, Herold adhered to the high standards of good craftsman tradition. Therefore, he did not use any pre produced parts but built his instruments always from scratch. In 1934 he was the head of the Brunndöbra instrument makers guild and refused the so-called "Gleichschaltung", i. e. the subordination of the guild to the Nazi system. From 1945 until his death in 1975 he was the head of the Klingenthal violin makers guild. The flawless craftsmanship of the Herold violin that we are offering here can easily be seen by the beautifully rounded edges and the fine purfling. The slab-cut maple of the one-piece back is a precious tonewood, that was covered with an extremely beautiful, highly transparent varnish with nice antique touches at the corners and at the scroll. The ribs are decorated by softly flamed maple. The quality craftsmanship of this interesting master violin perfectly matches its tonal qualities, a highly recommendable, delicate voice with a warm, light and fluid character. Our experienced luthier completely worked over the violin, that is ready to play and bears the original stamp of Richard Herold inside the body as an evidence of its provenance.
