Cello bow from the workshop of W. E. Hill & Sons – a high-quality example of fine English bow making from the early 20th century

W. E. Hill & Sons is one of the most important English bow-making workshops. Under William Ebsworth Hill, the company developed into a leading international business in the 19th century, establishing its own highly specialised bow-making department in addition to its trading activities. Renowned bow makers such as Samuel Allen, William C. Retford and later Arthur Bultitude worked there, shaping a clearly defined, strictly controlled style. Hill bows are known for their fine craftsmanship, reliable playability and consistent quality, and are among the most sought-after English bows of their time. The cello bow offered here is in excellent, almost unused condition. Weighing 78 g, it is within the usual weight range for classic Hill cello bows. The strong, dark reddish-brown pernambuco stick with a round cross-section is fitted with a plain ebony frog with genuine silver fittings, which is as discreet as it is classic. The sound is large, warm, powerful and precise, with the perceived centre of gravity in the upper half of the stick. An expressive and convincing fine cello bow from W. E. Hill & Sons, combining precision craftsmanship, reliable playing characteristics and historically significant workshop tradition in an excellently preserved piece. Delivered free of charge, with a 30-day return policy and Corilon's trade-in guarantee.
