Fine French master violin by Joseph Vautrin, Chaumont, around 1910/1920 – an exact copy of the ‘Messiah’ Stradivari
The ‘Messiah’ Stradivarius is one of the most famous violins in the world and has repeatedly inspired the best violinmakers to take a closer look at the work of Antonio Stradivarius. This exact replica, made by Joseph Vautrin, is so outstanding that it must have been created as a so-called bench copy, i.e. based on the original in Vautrin's workshop. The true solo sound of this violin matches its high quality: radiant, full and clear, mature and supported by good volume.
Joseph Vautrin's interest may have gone beyond the challenge of violin making, since he had begun his career as a musician and composer. Trained in the classical Mirecourt violin-making tradition under Paul Chipot, he became head of Émile Germain's workshop in Paris before settling in Chaumont in 1894. This Joseph Vautrin violin was crafted during the finest period of his work and must have taken months to complete: The fine workmanship shows that Joseph Vautrin wanted to achieve absolute perfection with this instrument, as the original label inside the body demands: ‘Copie exacte du MESSIE par Joseph Vautrin’. The orange-brown oil varnish, darkened by time, gives the tonewoods, chosen with fine patina and craquelle in an excellent Stradivari model, a noble antique character. We offer this violin in top condition, crack-free and ready to play, checked by our violin-making experts, for whom this rarely well-made Stradivari copy itself was an interesting object of study.
