This violin labeled Nikolaus Amatus is an indeed beautiful German Saxon piece of work from around the turn of the century c1900. The model is after Amati as indicated by the label. The top is made of medium grained spruce, the one piece back of flamed maple. The transparent varnish is especially attractive. The varnish is rich and of a golden brown color. The long pegbox and the small scroll is very characteristic. The violin is despite a minor repair at the right soundhole crackfree and in very good condition. It has been luthier-set up with new pegs, bridge, soundpost and strings and can be played right away. The violins sound is bright, open and rich in overtones, a bit sweetish in the upper ranges and generally even and homogen.
