The 18th century English style of violin making is one of the European traditions in which a certain adherence to the historic tonal standards of Stainer’s and Amati’s models persisted for a comparatively long time; the influence of Stradivari models did not become predominant until rather late. One outstanding example of this is the fine master violin we present here, which was masterfully crafted around 1780. In its clearly identifiable homage to Amati, this interesting 18th century violin has a compelling voice with a highly interesting dark and somewhat strict sound. It was probably made in Scotland, and its master, whose name sadly remains unknown, demonstrated excellent knowledge and wide-ranging experience, starting with the tone woods he chose. The top is made of finely-grained spruce and the two-part back of deep and tightly flamed maple. This expressive grain was then accentuated by a transparent and profoundly luminous varnish of a rare beauty. The spirited carving of the scroll rounds out the distinctive and harmonious aesthetic of this instrument, which was certainly shaped by a different philosophy than the avant garde which prevailed in its day. This extraordinary 18th century master violin has found aficionados throughout the generations, since it clearly was played often but also kept in very good condition. The restorations which can be expected from an 18th century stringed instrument of this advanced age were all performed with a striking degree of painstaking care and expertise. We have set up this historic violin at our studio and made it ready to play, and we recommend it to musicians who are open to the complex world of a voice that complements the tradition of historically informed interpretations.
