Historical discovery – a mature and beautifully sounding French violin from the late period of Charles Adolphe Maucotel, with hidden signatures in the body
Charles Adolphe Maucotel (1820–1858) was a promising master who died at the zenith of his career. The violin offered here was made in the workshop of Gand Jeune a few years earlier, and it was only in our workshop that it revealed that it was a sonically and historically significant commission by this interesting luthier.
Maucotel's signatures on the inside of the back and top became visible when we opened the body. The fact that this Gand violin is by Charles Adolphe Maucotel is a surprising discovery – after all, it shows the influence of Jean Baptiste Vuillaume, with whom Maucotel is said to have worked, much less than other violins by his hand. Built during the most productive period of his workshop, this work is characterized by a personal touch that is exemplified by the beautifully crafted scroll and the color play of the dark red varnish. Its pronounced craquele emphasizes the advanced age of this high-quality French violin, which bears the original label of Maucotel's client – the renowned instrument dealer Gand jeune in Angers. Its slightly smaller body, with a back length of 35.7 cm, makes it comfortable to play, allowing the mature, sweet character of its bright and clear, silvery sound to unfold in a nuanced way.
