This rare antique violin stamped “Maline” was probably made by Guillaume Maline, an extremely interesting instrument from the hand of this fascinating violin maker. In the shadow of his son Nicolas Maline, who was an outstanding bow maker and one of J. B. Vuillaume's best employees, Guillaume himself was long considered a bow maker who only occasionally built string instruments – an assessment that is clearly incorrect, as evidenced not least by the quality of the violin offered here. It is a very successful example of the classical French school and, with its mysterious darkened varnish on the top, shows that it belongs to a completely different era. The beautifully flamed, one-piece back and the accentuated edges demonstrate the high standard of Guillaume Maline's work. Minor repairs are not unusual for an instrument that has been played extensively for almost 250 years, and we have thoroughly convinced ourselves in our specialist workshop that a long-standing peg repair does not impair the quality of this excellently preserved instrument. This rare Maline violin impresses musically with its mature, warm, and rich sound. We recommend this violin to musicians who are looking for an instrument of rarity and unmistakable individuality.
