An old violin by Max Schäffner. Max Schäffner was born in Markneukirchen in 1870 and studied in Leipzig and Nürnberg until he settled in Hamburg in 1906. The violin was made in Hamburg in 1923. The model is after Antonius Stradivarius. The top is made of medium grained spruce, the two piece back of flamed maple. The slightly patinated varnish is of a warm light brown color over a lighter ground. The violin is well preserved and in immediate playing condition. It is except for a minor saddle repair at the treble soundhole (less than 3cm in length) undamaged and crackfree. The violin is set up with a new bridge, soundpost and new Pirastro strings. The sound is bright and clear, strong and with that slight mellowish note almost "Italian". The sound is very well balanced.
