This Italian violin is a superb modern instrument which can be wholeheartedly recommended for solo performance thanks to its large, radiant sound and its excellent response. Its provenance is confirmed by the original label dated and signed by the Sicilian master Alfio Messina, who made the violin in 1923 and patterned it after a graceful model with a low-arched table. The language this Italian violin speaks is inimitable and clear in its striking aesthetic: deeply and closely flamed maple influences its distinctive appearance, from the two-piece back to the ribs all the way to the expressively carved scroll. The opulent purfling and an orange-reddish oil varnish with fine crackling in the finest Italian tradition accentuate the self-assured individuality of this work. It seems almost certain that the violin was in the hands of its first owner until now, based on the photos we discovered in the case; we are including them as an interesting historic curio. This extremely attractive instrument was restored and set up with the greatest of care at our master atelier, and we recommend it to sophisticated musicians who will appreciate its dominant and clear sound defined by an unmistakably Italian character.
