A self-confident individuality and full-blooded Italian character are the hallmarks of this Delfi Merlo Italian violin, a rare instrument which ranks amongst the truly astonishing early works of this internationally renowned master. The craftsmanship and musical standards Merlo demonstrated with this 1979 violin can be considered a tribute to the rich traditions of the workshop where he learned his trade, the Monzino atelier, which was founded in 1750 in Milan. Delfi Merlo rightfully marked this instrument several times to identify himself as its creator: in addition to the original label, there are several brand marks on the inside and his initials on the button. The very evenly grained premium spruce of the top and the deep flames of the sycamore maple used for the two-piece back are Italian tone woods of the highest quality. The large and powerful scroll as well as the broad beesting corners express the unmistakable personal style Delfi Merlo would further develop in the course of his training. The thick coat of golden-yellow varnish is typical of Cremona violin making of the day, where he completed his training and quickly advanced to become an internationally sought-after master whose new instruments established a good name for him just as much as his excellent abilities as a restorer. Intensive traces of use testify to the enthusiasm that this violin’s exceptionally good sound has inspired within its short lifespan. The radiant richness of its bright and sweet character is worthy of our special recommendation for sophisticated musicians. This interesting Italian violin has now been carefully set up and made ready to play, waiting to become a dependable and multi-facetted musical partner. A certificate of authenticity issued by the maker is included in the price.
