Cremona violin by Luigi Aquilino 2025: Personal interpretation of the 1724 Stradivari model with easy response and a brilliant, soloistic sound rich in overtones
It was a semi-spontaneous visit, announced by the rattling mudguard on Luigi Aquilino's bicycle: as is customary among good neighbors, he insisted on bringing by in person the violin he had selected for our selection of contemporary Cremonese violins. Luigi Aquilino is one of the veterans of the current violin-making scene in tranquil Cremona: a mature, experienced master who passed his final exam at the famous violin-making school in Cremona in 1987 and then went on to deepen his art with Gio Batta Morassi. He has always remained faithful to the old Italian masters he studied as a young man and continues to work according to their strict rules of craftsmanship, which, in his justified opinion, offer more scope for personal style and different musical profiles than a person can explore in a lifetime. This Luigi Aquilino violin was also based on a proven Stradivari model, which is based on the work of the historic master from 1724. Masterfully selected and crafted tonewoods, such as the deeply flamed maple of the back, shine through the very attractive orange-brown varnish, which Luigi Aquilino made according to his own recipe and applied to a bright golden base. Musically, he has succeeded in creating an instrument that is perfectly suited to soloists, whose easy response also responds well to a firmer bowing and supports leading voices in the ensemble, allowing them to assert themselves with overtone-rich brilliance and blend smoothly back into the overall sound.
